Philisophy in Pubs
Couldn't get to sleep last night and came across this organisation at 4am on the radio. It was set up in Liverpool and attempts to promote debate, thinking and questioning about all aspects of our life.
Yes, in pubs. The whole concept may come across as a little farfetched and on first thoughts I didn't take the idea too seriously. Unable to drift off, I gave the idea some further consideration and thought about my recent experiences of London's pubs...
Patrons deep in conversation discussing topics such as the purpose of religion, suffering and conflict resolution is precisely what we need in Britain's pubs. They have become besieged by binge drinking, fights and general stress. This has also been one of the key factors in the increasing number of public houses that are being forced to close down (approximately 50/week).
For me, going to the pub is not about getting hammered. It is an important place for families to socialise and communities to congregate, bringing them closer together. Our culture of consuming more and more is no different in the pub; we drink until we're drunk and make pubs an antisocial experience at the best of times.
